Description

Introduction Recognising and naming psychological abuse requires a well-developed understanding of the tactics of workplace bullies and, ideally, an understanding of what Foucault calls the 'meticulous rituals' or the micro-physics of power (Hall 1997, 50). This refers to those strategies which 'roots [power] in forms of behaviour, bodies and local relations of power which should not at all be seen as a simple projection of the central power' (Foucault 1980, 201 cited in Hall 1997, 50). Foucault is interested in the way individuals have been administered and the varying structures of power that have organised lives in the most banal and invisible way (Randall 1997). Power operates everywhere. It produces reality and thereby constitutes our knowledge of what is natural, normal and true. It constitutes our knowledge of ourselves, the truth about who we are (Randall 1997). Anecdotal experience suggests that without prior knowledge of power relations and the tactics of abuse, students on placement may become potential victims of 'workplace bullying'. Thus taking on negative truths and beliefs about themselves, regarding themselves as 'the problem', believing that 'they just don't have what it takes'. Elements of workplace bullying clearly correspond with elements of domestic violence in that the effects often render victims powerless to act on the situation. Students, experiencing 'workplace bullying' need to be aware this failure to act is not always a reflection of their professional or personal shortcomings but rather a lack of awareness of the insidious nature of workplace bullying in the form of psychological abuse. 'Bully-proofing' students will ensure that abuse of power is named and can be addressed even if, as is a regular tactic of an abuser, stories have been created by the abuser to hide this kind of behaviour.
